About

I’m JR — a lifelong collector and the writer behind Cardsteward.

I’ve been actively collecting for about the last twelve years — mostly Pokémon, with some Yu-Gi-Oh! and a little Magic. I track my collection meticulously, I’m particular about how it’s protected and organized, and I’ve spent years running trend analysis on card prices to make more informed buying decisions instead of chasing hype.

Outside the hobby, my background is in research and data analysis, and I’ve spent six-plus years running businesses — both ecommerce and brick-and-mortar. I hold a Master of Science and a professional certification in my field. I don’t lead with any of that because it makes me a card authority — it doesn’t. I mention it because the discipline behind it is the one thing this whole site runs on: look at the evidence, question the claim, and don’t trust anything that can’t back itself up.

Why this site exists

Most money-and-risk advice in this hobby is hype — people making emotional financial decisions and calling it strategy. That always bothered me. The same habits I use in my work — check the data, separate signal from noise — apply just as well to a collection as they do to anything else.

Cardsteward is where I put that to use. The goal is simple: be the neutral, independent place a collector or shop owner goes to actually understand their insurance, financing, and protection decisions — and then get pointed toward the right provider.

The key word is independent. I compare providers; I don’t represent one. Nobody can pay to be ranked first here or to keep a competitor off a page. That’s the whole point — the kind of straight, cross-provider comparison a single insurer’s own website structurally can’t give you.

I also think you’re allowed to enjoy this. These are games and cards we love; the aim isn’t to suck the fun out of collecting, it’s to keep an expensive hobby from turning into an expensive mistake.

One important thing

I’m a collector and a researcher, not a licensed insurance agent or financial advisor. Everything here is independent education meant to help you ask sharper questions and make your own call. For your specific situation, confirm the details with the provider and talk to a licensed professional before you decide.
